The inspiration for this gentle and lyrical piano prayer originally came from a Ukrainian folk song and is the next in the barefoot piano prayers growing collection of Night Sketches.

'What a Moonlit Night' is a popular a love song supposedly sung by a man to his sweetheart, but there's something about the lyrics that really touched me, especially in the light of the terrible turn of events in the Ukraine at the moment.

I've included a couple of lines that I found particularly poignant in the lyrics section below. I was struck by the promises of comfort and safety and that they are not so dissimilar to some of the Psalms and to God's promises to us. A somewhat slow and tentative opening gradually gains momentum and confidence as the piece progresses, a reflection of the power of God's love, given time, to heal and restore.

My prayer is that those fleeing their homes will find comfort and safety know themselves to be held close to God's heart, whoever or whatever they perceive God to be. Hence the title.
